In 1978 the World Champions, West Germany, came to Argentina without Franz Beckenbauer, he had signed with Cosmos of New York for $2,500,000. The hosts, Argentina, had a new manager, Cesar Luis Menotti. He had promised his team would abandon their violent past in favour of skill - Kempes would be the man to watch. Cruyff of Holland had chosen no to join his team, they would be relying on Rensenbrinka and Neeskens. Italy were to sport their new star Paolo Rossi while France had one of the best players in Europe, the 21 year-old Michael Platini.
Brazil, with Zico and an overweight Rivelino, beat Italy 2-1 to take third place in the competition. Holland, after a 5-1 win over Austria and a draw with arch rivals Germany, made the final.
Argentina took the field, a controversial five minutes late, to a memorable snowstorm of paper. Mario Kempes was to distinguish himself with to marvellous goals while the Dutch were held at bay by keeper Fillol. Nanninga headed a goal for Holland, which called for extra time. The near-hysterical Argentine supporters were rewarded with a 3-1 victory - the streets of Buenos Aires would be thronged all night by ecstatic thousands.
