The year 2003 saw the final sequencing of the human genome. A cure for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes or Alzheimer's appeared to be on the horizon.
Genes for criminal behaviour, homosexuality, depression or alcoholism are being looked for and it is believed that the solution to addiction and social problems lies in genetic manipulation. The reproduction industry promotes the "perfect" child with genetic analysis. In the so-called vampire project scientists and industry, under the pretext of preventive health and without asking, take blood, hair and saliva samples from socalled ethnic groups on the verge of extinction. These samples wander into the genetic laboratories with the prospect of being patendet later. The Icelandic parliament sells the pool of genes of the entire population to a private company, hoping that this would create high-tech jobs. Suddenly, the primary motive for genetic research appears not to be for scientific progress or curing diseases but rather to achieve unprecedented profits.
