The venue was the Ontario Speedway near Los Angeles in California. Acrowd of some 200.000 paying customers were attending on of the largest rock festivals of the seventies, The California Jam.
It Had run like clockwork, three stages had ensured an orderly procession of bands Earth Wind & Fire, The Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Savvath and more had been and gone. The crowd waited patiently for the headliners Deep Purple.

Backstage however, the scene was pandemonium. tempers frayed as promoters argued and threatened Deep Purple who were sticking by their contract to take the stage at dusk. tey got their way and the audience saw an unforgettable performances as the band incense by the antics backstage, turned out a ferocious set; exellent wven by the high standards of their 1974 tour. Burn, Might Just Take Your Life, Mistreated, Smoke On The Water, You Foll No One, The Mule and Space Truckin_braught the festival to life, while Blackmare, playing like a demon saved his revenge for the end. The final five minutes of the show became a pyrotechnic tour de force which saw not only one of the TV-Cameras in ruins but almost blew Blackmore off his feet.
