'A City of Sadness' is the story of the Lin family's epic struggle to survive as their country tears itself apart. It is August 1945. The Japanese have surrendered, and Taiwan has reverted to Chinese rule. The elders of the family live on the edge of the underworld, whilst the youngest, a deaf mute, becomes involved in the fearsome political struggles of the time. As the mainland Chinese move into the island, the old order is broken up with tragic consequences.
Hou's masterly film won the 1989 Venice Golden Lion and he is now regarded as one of the world's greatest film-makers.
