When the Japanese invasion of Burma threatened India and cut supply routes to China, the British forces realised they would have to dig in and hold out at all costs, usually with few men and little in the way of ammunition and supplies.
War in Burma was cruel and vicious, often with no prisoners taken. Casualties were high, especially on the Japanese side, where it is estimated that three-fifths of their entire strength in the region were killed.
It required a special breed of soldier - like Wingate's legendary Chindits and the American strike force known as "Merill's Marauders" to fight this kind of war. These were soldiers capable of penetrating deep behind enemy lines, hunting down Japanese patrols and destroying vital installations and communications routes.
Using film supplied by British, Indian and American combat cameramen, this rare British Army Film Unit production captures all the drama and brutality of the Burma Campaign, with extensive us of combat footage and a review of the strategy and tactics employed.
